The Cue: Billiards, Snooker & Cafe, in Slave Island is one of the longstanding occupant of the beautiful but deteriorating Victorian style De Soysa building built in the 1870s. The cafe is the current reincarnation of Sri Lanka’s oldest surviving billiards club; The Colombo Central Club established in 1946. It is also the official headquarters of the Sri Lanka Association of Billiards and Snooker. The Cue, has a cafe & restaurant on the ground floor and the Billiards room on the upper floor. My favorite feature of the establishment is the original Wall of Honor that is now part of the cafe. This museum-like room adorns old photographs and lists the names of champions and record setters dating back to 1948.The cafe serves Rice & Curry, Biriyani, Kottu, Egg Roti, Malay food items, Snacks, Soups and Juices. This is a self-service cafe. Customers order and pay for what they want at the counter at the entrance then proceed to take a seat. A waiter would then bring your order to your table. I strongly recommend sitting at a table in the museum with the Wall of Honor. The Malay people make a wonderful thin, spicy gravy in which the meat is cooked. They call it 'aanam'. The authentic Malay aanam is slowly disappearing from restaurants and is being replaced with Miris Hoddha (Sri Lankan chili gravy). Aanam these days, seems to mean any form of gravy. However, The Cue offers proper aanam with its beef curry. Customers who order rice and curry with beef (priced at Rs. 200), get to enjoy this simple authentic delicacy. Do note, unlike the beef curry, the chicken curry is cooked in miris hoddha. The helpful lady in the food serving area, the old gent behind the cash register and the sweet old waiter are all very helpful, courteous and instantly likable. With the new government-propelled development that has been taking place in this area, the cafe and the good old building itself may not last for very long. If you are in Colombo, visit The Cue for lunch between 11:30am to 1:30pm. Enjoy some super-tasty beef aanam with your rice and curry. Sit facing the nostalgic Wall of Honor as you browse through photographs of the giants of Sri Lankan billiards and snooker.
