Had dinner at The Mexzican Gourmet on a Thursday evening. I ordered a trio of tacos, a Pescado Taco, a Carne Asada Taco, and a Legendaria Taco along with the Rice and Beans it came with. Quality Although perhaps better than I expected when I first walked in the door in the end I found the tacos very average. The best one was probably the Legendaria Taco, which is a mix of beef, pork, chorizo, and chicharron. Just the mix of different flavors and textures creates a pretty delicious combination. I was less impressed with the Carne Asada Tacos, which seemed over-seasoned and frankly overcooked. It was just too chewy for me to enjoy and I ended up leaving a lot of it on the plate. The Pescado Taco was good, but not great, but I often find myself easy to please when it comes to fish tacos. The chipotle-mayo sauce was good, but almost overwhelming on the sandwich, and the mix of cabbage and lettuce was too much. I preferred the simplicity of just onion and cilantro on the other tacos. Then there was the Rice and Beans, which as far as I was concerned could not have even come. I only had a few spoonfuls before I left to aside, and it also made me worried about any dishes that would have them. The rice was especially disconcerting as it seemed both over and under cooked. Quantity They provide a bowl of chips and salsa to start and the tacos are all pretty packed. They also give an entirely unnecessary and not very appetizing Rice and Beans, so quantity is not really at issue. Value Definitely felt too expensive for pretty mediocre tacos. Maybe I expect too much, but nothing really wowed me, and for the price I felt like I should at least be impressed. Ambiance The Mexzican Gourmet is tucked away in a little corner of South Miami, right on US-1, but you would not even know it. They have a small outdoor area with a few tables and coverings, but it is basically in the middle of a small parking lot. The inside is surprisingly large, but the centralized kitchen takes up a good deal of space. The walls are covered with movie posters of old Spanish films, and they had one television placed way too high. It had soccer on, which should not be surprising, but with ceiling hangings, I doubt there was a seat in the house that you could actually see what was going on. They had the audio of the game on, which was weird because it did not seem important or interesting, and some music would have done some good. The inside was also very dark, and it wasn't until you could almost not see that they finally turned on the lights. Crowd Two other people were in the restaurant when I was there, and they left shortly after I arrived. They had four people working so I am surprised this place can even survive. I would not expect any sort of crowd, especially now that several other taco places have opened up nearby. Service When you are outnumbered by the staff there tends to be a constant almost hawking feeling. That was how I felt from the minute I walked in, as if someone needed to check on me after every bite. I was in no rush, but in the end I felt the need to leave because the constant attention made me uncomfortable. Parking They have this weird lot right in back with several spaces, but honestly I could not even tell you whether you are permitted to park there. However, you can find plenty of other street parking and garages nearby since it is very close to Sunset. Extra Nothing about The Mexzican Gourmet made me want to visit them again. Although the food was not really the problem it was far from good enough to make up for other issues. I felt for what it was it was too expensive and what others may have felt as charming and attentive service I felt as overbearing and uncomfortable. I do not expect to be returning.
