However, during the dinner scene, Alice started throwing animals’ dead body parts into the audience. She had said ‘is anyone vegan?’ to the front row as an aside at the beginning of the scene. This suggests that she knew that this might be a cause of concern for some people in Edinburgh - since it’s a city with a lot of vegans as well as Muslims, that is a reasonable thought. I’m not vegan, but I do understand the violence pigs go through in the meat industry - they spend their whole lives in crowded, windowless factory farms, get stunned in carbon dioxide gas chambers, and ultimately have their throat slit when they’re still young. Naturally, I didn’t feel comfortable at all with the products of this abuse being thrown at me. I actually perceived it as quite violent, albeit it’s nowhere near the violence felt by the pig whose body it was. I felt unsafe, so I left immediately.
I’m writing this review because I believe the people who put on this show might see it and reconsider doing things like this. There are a lot of things that could have been done instead that wouldn’t have been violent towards anybody. I’m hoping it was maybe an oversight, and the crew will be more thoughtful about this kind of thing in the future.
