Special location , disappointing Sunday roast. The 2 thin slices of beef looked remarkably like the supermarket packet beef I put in my lunchtime sandwich. The veg was warm rather than hot. I have had a roast here before which was excellent but after that meal it will be a long time until I eat here again. Food: 1 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 5 Price per person: £70–80

This is one of our local pubs and we’ve often gone for drinks there but not had too much luck over the years with regard to food. We like to support our community by eating out from time to time so thought we’d give The Sail Inn another try - we ordered one of the specials- Chicken and leek Pie - with chips! ( we were hungry!). The service was prompt , the food- awful. The ‘pie’ was presented in a dish, containing what looked and tasted like a ‘cornflour thickened’ white flavourless sauce of reconstituted chicken pieces and a sprinkling of green specks - presumably the leek. It contained no hint of chicken flavour whatsoever-just the appearance of vacuum packed chicken pieces . The pastry was the standard puff pastry which sat on top- accompanied with whisked instant gravy and chips. The side dish of veg ( carrots , cabbage and beans ) looked tired and after tasting the pie we had lost the will for these. The chips were fine and we ate those -we’d paid upfront and were both hungry. We did talk to the person behind the bar suggesting that they should either take the pie off the menu or get a different recipe- to be fair they apologised and asked if we’d like anything else. We declined as we’d had enough. We saw the ‘chef’ on the way out and asked him if he’d tasted the dish - he said he’d not tasted it as it was the chef from the day before who’d made it. I find it strange that a chef would not test a dish ( whether she / he’d made it or not) before putting it on the menu. To be honest- just the appearance of the chicken and sauce would make you think it wasn’t up to scratch. It was a truly awful meal and hopefully the other dishes on offer are much better as the ambiance of the pub is great but the food on this occasion let it down massively. Hopefully this was a ‘one off’ and we were just unlucky on this occasion. Food: 1 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 3 Price per person: £30–40
