First time here but will happily go again. Had a very nice veggie dish of wild mushrooms with I think garlic sauce with poached egg on top and a well kept Betty Stoggs. Attractive pub, comfortable and friendly staff. Only a couple of veggie options otherwise I'd have given 5* Price per person: £20–30

My sister booked our family in to celebrate her son’s birthday. On arrival we were greeted by a waitress who was not welcoming. When she booked we were not advised that we only had an hour and a half before the next sitting. Another waitress came to take our drinks order, she was polite and warm but we were not given the food menu until we asked and by the time our food arrived we had very little time to eat it. We were not offered desserts and another waitress who was quite rude and unfriendly started clearing our plates and rushing us out the door. Food was nice but the atmosphere and the waiting staff made it unenjoyable. Won’t be returning . Price per person: £30–40

We visited The Wheel Inn today for Sunday lunch after seeing several positive recommendations on social media and hearing it mentioned as one of Cornwall's up-and-coming roast destinations. As a result, we arrived with fairly high expectations. The pub itself is a traditional old Cornish inn full of character. There is parking at the rear and wheelchair access appears possible via the car park entrance, although I'm not sure how accessible the toilet facilities would be, as the toilets are located outside the main building near the car park. On arrival, we didn't really receive a welcome or acknowledgement as we entered the pub. It wasn't particularly busy at the time, and we found ourselves feeling a little unsure about where to go or who to speak to. To be fair, the staff were friendly, helpful and accommodating once we were seated, so this may simply have been a one-off experience. However, first impressions count, and it perhaps contributed to the atmosphere feeling a little subdued from the outset. ️ The Sunday menu was focused mainly around roast dinners, with a choice of roast beef or roast pork on the day we visited, alongside a selection of starters and desserts. The staff were excellent when it came to accommodating requests. My daughter doesn't eat beef or pork, and the kitchen happily prepared homemade giant chicken goujons for her while allowing her to swap chips for the roast vegetables and Yorkshire puddings. My wife chose the vegetarian tart, and the chef also offered to adapt the mussels dish by preparing the sauce without bacon if required, which was much appreciated. The food itself had some real highlights. The beef was fantastic, tender and perfectly pink. The Yorkshire puddings were outstanding and unanimously scored 10 out of 10 by our table. The meat versions even contained a little roast beef and gravy hidden inside, which was unusual and very enjoyable. Portions were generous, and there was plenty of rich gravy served alongside. Not everything hit the mark, however. The roast potatoes, cooked in duck fat, tasted a little greasy for our liking. The vegetables arrived as a mixed medley containing parsnips, carrots, swede, kale and peas all served together in one dish. While this worked well for the adults, the children found it harder to pick out the vegetables they liked. Our biggest disappointment was the overall atmosphere. Despite the quality of the food, the dining room lacked the warmth and buzz we had been expecting from a venue with such strong recommendations. There was no background music playing in the room we were seated in, which made the space feel rather quiet and subdued, particularly as the pub wasn't especially busy at the time. A little background music and some extra ambience would have gone a long way towards creating a more welcoming and memorable dining experience. In addition, the toilet facilities could have been better maintained. During our visit there was only one gents toilet available, it wasn't particularly clean, and the soap dispenser was empty, which isn't ideal in a food establishment. Overall, there were some genuinely excellent elements to our meal, particularly the quality of the beef, the Yorkshire puddings and the accommodating service once we were settled. However, a few aspects of the overall experience didn't quite live up to the expectations created by the reviews we'd read beforehand. Would we return? Possibly. There was certainly enough quality on the plate to consider another visit. For us, this felt closer to a 3½-star experience than a full 4 stars, with some genuinely excellent food alongside a few areas that could be improved. If you're in the area and enjoy a traditional Sunday roast, it's still worth trying for yourself and making up your own mind. Price per person: £20–30 Food: 5 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 3 Vegetarian offerings: Clearly labelled vegetarian dishes Vegetarian options: The chef was welcome to alter dishes for vegetarian options where possible
