Extremely disappointed by this "French" restaurant. As a French person, I'm honestly embarrassed that this is being presented as French cuisine. In France, we have what we call bistros: casual restaurants where the food can be hit or miss, service may be average, and prices are generally reasonable. Then we have more refined restaurants, where you expect high-quality food, excellent service, and are willing to pay a premium for the experience. Troquet on South feels like a bistro charging fine-dining prices. We came mainly because of the restaurant's reputation for having a great wine selection. Unfortunately, we had to repeat our wine order multiple times, and the wrong bottles were brought to the table before we finally received what we ordered. The wines themselves were enjoyable, but the white wine was clearly not chilled enough. The food was even more disappointing. The beef tartare was obviously not hand-cut and was covered with dried onions that completely overwhelmed the dish. The steak frites was served with ketchup. For a restaurant claiming to represent French cuisine, this was difficult to understand. A peppercorn sauce (sauce au poivre) or even a proper tartar sauce would have been far more appropriate. The cheese selection was good, but it was served with bread packed with dried fruit. When the cheese is of good quality, you want its flavors to shine rather than compete with strongly flavored bread. Finally, the "Baba au Bourbon" was another disappointment. As a dessert, it was pleasant enough, but it had nothing in common with a traditional Baba au Rhum. To top it all off, our table was unstable and wobbled throughout the meal. In the end, we paid a very high price for food that was average at best and bore little resemblance to French gastronomy. There are far better places in Boston to enjoy French-inspired food and wine. Thank you, Anaïs, for visiting with us. One of the reasons we’ve been in business for over 20 years is because we listen closely to guest feedback, and we change with the times. The times are changing, especially in the post-Covid Boston fine dining scene. Prices have indeed climbed, and we are fighting that battle daily. The pressures of paying for rent, ingredients, and our crew have all made their contributions to inflation. Fine dining isn’t as formal as it was ten years ago. Many of the restaurants in the more formal space have sadly left us, and we wish they were still here. Instead, we’ve expanded our bar program, and we cater to local tastes. Many Europeans enjoy their frites with aioli, but in Boston, we serve them with ketchup.(We have sold 170 plates of hand-cut steak tartare, and 110 cheese platters in the past 3 months. You are the only guest to give negative feedback on these dishes, and we’ll take it into consideration.)I apologize; we did not reach your expectations. We are not attempting to carry the torch of French gastronomy. We steal from Portugal, and Korea, and Italy, but we just use a lot of Normandy butter when doing so! We just want to be a great neighborhood restaurant, and to serve the public for another 20 years. We hope that you consider this context during your next restaurant visit, and we welcome you and your guests back anytime.--Jake Tringali, General Manager

A solid 3.5/5. I found the food underwhelming and overpriced compared to other french restaurants in the city. We had the tartare and rib eye which was just ok. The creme brulee was burnt on top and hard to finish. Highlight of our night was stopping at the bar on our way out for drinks. 5/5 for the bar tender who made our night with fabulous night caps.
