Perfectly located on Nelson Mandela Square to take full advantage of tourists travelling through Johannesburg, this Grillhouse run by three brothers (Dennis, Allen and Michael Martin with an emphasis on their use of Karan Beef) certainly is all about red meat!
Their specialty? Steaks aged on site.
Food:
On this first visit, we chose to share:
Roquefort Salad: Mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, onion and blue cheese, topped with a blue cheese sauce. Lots of lettuce but the blue cheese sauce was delicious!
Springbok Carpaccio: served on fresh rocket with balsamic caramel, Grana Padano shavings and fresh lemon. Really lovely combination of flavours, textures, and for me, the Grana Padano made the dish!
For mains, we both selected the 550g Rib Eye, medium rare of course!
My partners steak arrived, cooked to perfection and delicious (although not rested as the plate was quite bloody).
My Rib Eye, sadly, despite its label in the photo attached (and my specific request), did not arrive medium rare and was quite chewy, tough and tasteless, which resulted in me leaving it after a few bites.
For dessert, we chose the passion fruit and lemon cheesecake made with lemon curd on a gingerbread crumble base, topped with a granadilla and lemon fruit glaze and served with vanilla ice cream. Great dessert and the fruit was refreshing after such a heavy meal!
Service:
The service was fine.
Ambiance:
On this first visit, we were seated in the private dining area set aside for functions or large dining tables so I cannot comment on the ambiance and will update soon.
*Recommendation: In summary, we enjoyed our evening, but with a restaurant that boasts great steak, I expected more from my first meal here.
