Zinfandel Amador County12 per 6 bottleGold medal, world wine championships, 90 points, tastings.Com the boss loves zinfandel. In the 1980s he made many memorable napa valley zinfandels. But the market wasn't so favorable, and many of the great zinfandel vineyards were pulled and replanted with other, more trendy varietals. It was then the boss began to look for high quality zinfandel grapes elsewhere, and what he found was a terrific vineyard in the sierra nevada foothills. This zinfandel reflects that find. The 15.4% alcohol has kept this zinfandel in great shape, perfect for hearty winter stews and tomato-based pasta dishes. And at this price it even goes great with pizza! — Skippy, chief cellar rat

The Good Life in Napa ValleyAn interview with Tulocay owner Bill Cadman
Tulocay Rancho Sarco Cabernet Sauvignon
-
Rancho Sarco VineyardThe boss has been buying grapes from the Rancho Sarco Vineyard, located in the cool Coombsville District just north of the winery about two miles, since 2002. Like Chateau Haut Brion just outside the city of Bordeaux, it is surrounded by housing tracts. And like Chateau Haut Brion, it produces incredible Cabernet Sauvignon. The Rancho Sarco Vineyard is owned and farmed by the Nord family, with whom the boss has had a relationship for nearly a decade. In the production of fine wines, a strong understanding must exist between grape grower and wine producer. The 2002 is representative of a cool microclimate Napa Valley Cabernet produced in the Tulocay style: Fully extracted, lean, much like an old-fashioned Médoc, and destined to last decades. In 2006, the vineyard produced a more atypical, ultra-ripe wine of 15.1% alcohol. Only 225 cases were bottled. It earned a Double Gold Medal in the 2009 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition

A friend of mine was once having dinner at a restaurant NebraskaYou know, home of "The Big Red". He asked the waitress for a glass of wine. "Chablis, rosé, burgundy, or Zinfandel?" she replied. "Zinfandel," he said. A few minutes later she arrived balancing a glass of something pink on her tray. She put it down in front of him.

Our Amador Zinfandels are so-o-o-o representative of the Amador style: big, ripe, generous, playful, jammy, alcoholic, mouthfilling.Currently available are the 2001 and 2002 vintages. Both are perfect for year-round consumption with barbecued meats during the summer and body-warming stews or tomato-laden pasta dishes during the winter. (In spring and fall you're on your own!) Rather than bore you with our polemics, we'll let the wines' fans speak for themselves From the wineloverspage.com

2009 Haynes Vineyard Pinot NoirGold Medal
-
Four Star Gold Medal2012 Orange County Fair The 2009 vintage of Haynes Vineyard fruit marks the 35lh consecutive year that I've bought grapes grown by Fernando Delgado. We met for the first time back in 1975, the year I started Tulocay Winery. At the time, Fernando lived in the vineyard that he was taking care of, owned by Duncan and Pat Haynes. After all those years, he's still there, and, yes, I'm still here. A lot of folks you'd recognize their names also make Pinot from this vineyard, which is located on a south facing slope just about a mile down the road east from the winery in the cool Coombsville microclimate. Each year the grapes keep getting better and better. For those who have long followed Tulocay Pinots, we hope you agree.

Inky amethyst color. Rich aromas of chocolate covered espresso bean, orange marmalade, berry pie, and bacon bits follow through on a satiny entry to a fruity-yet-dry medium-full body with layer of dried berries, citrus, and nuts. Finishes with a spicy, mocha, roasted nut, and grenadine fade. Very rich and appetizing.

When Bill Cadman tells the story of his life in the Napa wine business, the serious and the comic blend seamlessly into a chronicle of more than three decades in the Valley during a time of enormous change. In 1971 without prior experience, he wandered around the Napa Valley, found employment initially with Charles Krug, then Heitz, Clos du Val, and Mondavi. He bought a home with additional buildings on the property, and sitting around with friends one weekend, he decided to start a winery in his ample backyard. The rest of the story he tells in his own inimitable words, with minor editing for added clarity.Tulocay is an unusual name. Is it an Indian word? Tulocay Winery
