Zezo is a true Egyptian institution. In a country where certain spots are renowned for specific foods like foul and ta’meya, koshari, or kebabs, Zezo stands out as the destination for two iconic Egyptian sandwiches: sojok (spicy sausage) and kebdah (liver). The place has expanded over the years, but its charm remains intact—it’s been a cornerstone of Cairo’s food scene since I was a child. What makes Zezo special isn’t just the food, though—it’s the atmosphere. Egyptians from all walks of life, whether rich or poor, flock here and are treated like royalty. The restaurant is set against the backdrop of a historic and imposing structure that adds a unique charm as you savor your sandwiches, no matter how late into the night. For me, visiting Zezo is more than just grabbing a meal—it’s a tradition. Every time I arrive in Egypt from the U.S., Zezo is my first stop.
