I had so much fun dining at aKin last night. Food was phenomenal and ever so creative. When the waiter told us the theme was Chinese take out, I was secretly concerned. Little did I know we were treated with totally superb culinary experience. All kinds of subtley flavours, mingling wonderfully in the mouth. I particularly enjoyed the hot and sour soup. This was a mouthful of soup captured in an egg shaped container. You popped it in the mouth and the soup just oozed out. The chef did advise keeping your mouth closed. Another favorite dish was sweet and sour pork. The most tender pork I've ever tasted. What impressed me was that Eric Chong came out presenting one or two dishes to every table himself and you got to talk to the chef. What a young talent! Phenomenal food. It was delicious, well thought out, and most importantly, fun! The service was great but still felt unpretentious, and the pace of the food was great. Stand out was Nathan, our server and bar manager, who helped whip up a mocktail pairing list, which was so delicious - I’ve had a lot of mocktails, most of which has been expensive juice, but these were above and beyond. It was our first time visiting and overall, great experience. Food and drink were awesome, but I think the restaurant suffers from imposture syndrome. Stop trying so hard to impress us with the chef’s credentials. We already did our research if we booked at your restaurant. Our poor waitress had a 3 min speech memorized about the chef’s background, their achievements, where the name of the restaurant came from, etc, etc. And all of this was before our cocktail order was taken. After the speech, the rest of the dinner was smooth and service & food were excellent. But for heaven’s sake, don’t start the dinner with a long speech. It’s awkward for everyone.
