Please be aware that this is a positive comment on our visit to the Hummingbird Restaurant.
A little bit expensive to park, but was worth it in the end, but be careful there is a Parking attendant who is wide awake at all times, you have been warned.
This occupies a wonderful space and when we were there it was pretty full, being a hot sunny Sunday lunchtime. The Private area was buzzing with its long tables featuring a Family Birthday for a Lady who was 100 years young. We were lucky enough to get a window seat by an open door, so nice little breeze and a splendid view.
We could also have sat outside on what looked like very comfortable tables and chairs, looked great for sitting there for few hours with a few Gin and Tonics and the Beers looked good as well.
Our order of toasted sandwiches was fine, three rounds came with enough Salad and Crisps to make a meal of it, in fact we changed the menu for our later Dinner, as we were quite full up.
But beware if you order the Croque Monsieur, I have never experienced a Hummingbird Croque before, anywhere in the world! The slices of bread used were reminiscent of the new Sliced Tiger Bread from Iceland, they are bigger than a ‘Builder’s slice’, the spread of wodgy Cheese mixture was laid over the middle and some inferior Ham slices were plonked in the middle and another layer of Cheese mixture on the top and the whole lot partially grilled.
My companions looked agog at the plate, none of us had seen anything like it before, cutting into one half of the doorstep creation was relatively easy, but the resultant taste of bread was not what I have been led to believe had much resemblance to a Croque Monsieur. Profuse amounts of good salad complimented the plate, not the Croque! A little tin can of chips, warm but reasonable, completed the order, the chips were a separate order so highly priced like the car parking.
But, as I said, this is a positive review. I caught sight of many other items served to the day’s Visitors and they all looked scrummy, even the dominant bowls of Chips that were ordered for the Children. Even the sandwiches looked absolutely fresh and inviting.
My Recommendation, go visit what is now called Brighton City Airport, but really is still Shoreham Airport to you and me, enjoy the Restaurants, the food and drink, enjoy sitting outside if the weather is nice. This is a venue for all the Family and is highly recommended, just avoid the Croque Monsieur and no doubt the Croque Madame, unless of course you have the appetite of an Olympic Athlete and need the carbs and protein.
I am looking forward to an early return, to enjoy some of the other dishes and before the year is out a flight in the ancient 1940’s Tiger Moth Biplane, that you can see regularly taking off and landing, the plane is older than me and I am no spring chicken.
ps. I couldn't fault the serving staff, they were young, cheeky and really cheerful, 10 out of 10 for them.
