daBOARD feels like a place that is still deciding how big it wants to be, and this uncertainty is part of its appeal. Born from a kitchen car and now settled in a small room in Ashiya, the restaurant has a certain clarity about it. The food that once stopped people in the street now sits on plates, still holding that direct pull. The focus seems to be on slow-cooked beef cheek in red wine, soft enough to fall apart, with the sauce taking precedence over decoration. This is where the centre lies. The cooking leans towards broad European comfort food. It's not tightly composed French cuisine, nor is it casual café fare. It's something in between, where meat, sauce and warmth take the lead. It is approachable, but not careless. What makes the place interesting is its structure. It stretches. It offers Italian and French cuisine, bistro food, lunch, wine and set meals. This variety gives you freedom in how you use it, but also leaves things slightly open-ended. Focus emerges when you choose it. Order the stew and the restaurant's identity becomes clearer.
