I’ve heard that Chinese cuisine in Japan can be really good, and this was my first time trying it — honestly, I loved it. It was a 25-course menu. For the cold appetizers, everything was done really well except the second dish, which I personally didn’t enjoy. The most memorable dish was the daikon cake — super fragrant, perfectly crispy, and so savoury. It was genuinely the best dish on the entire menu for me. Other standouts were the mapo tofu (they added diced lotus root, which gave it a great texture and balance) and the almond tofu dessert, which was surprisingly impressive. This place doesn’t feel like a tourist trap at all — it’s very local, and definitely worth trying. Price per person: ¥10,000+ Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

The food at Hakubi is excellent. The chef really knows what he is doing. Watching him skillfully cook the dishes in his wok from our counter seats was a delight. All five of us really enjoyed his modern interpretation of classic dishes, all served in carefully chosen, beautiful dishes. The chef is also a natural when it comes to service - quietly attentive, very observant, and of course extremely respectful. I only wish everyone working there could be as good as Chef and that they could learn to communicate better with each other to deliver a dining experience that equals the quality of his food. There were a couple servers who were overconfident and a bit brusque despite being responsible for some mixups, which was unfortunate. The restaurant itself is beautiful and located in one of the most picturesque neighborhoods in Kyoto (especially at night when it’s empty). I debated whether to rate the atmosphere 4 or 5 only because I think the many staff behind the counter (many of whom are naturally still learning the trade) made things feel hectic. I tend to always choose counter seats because I like seeing the action - but in this case it felt like there was an overwhelming number of people behind the counter. Would I still recommend this restaurant to friends and family? Yes, because I really believe in this chef. He’s truly a gem. Food: 5 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 5
