Hidden on the first floor in one of Nara’s narrow streets, this place feels like a true local discovery you wouldn’t find unless you slow down and look carefully. I actually first noticed it while trying to read the menu in Japanese, and then saw a smiling woman step out of the door. That small moment made me come back later during opening hours and I’m so glad I did. This is not just about the food (which is absolutely delicious), but the whole experience. The atmosphere is warm, intimate, and real, and the people make it unforgettable. Even if you don’t speak Japanese, it’s worth opening up and trying to exchange a few words, even with the help of technology. They are incredibly kind and welcoming, and you can truly feel it. ご縁ですね」 (Go-en desu ne) you say in Japanese when you happily meet with people you were meat to. This is exactly what happened to us in Nara. We were exhausted of a loooong day walking through herds of tourists (like us I guess) and we needed something local. We found this place and we were lucky. Truly amazing experience in this izakaya (local tavern or bar) where we enjoyed the catch of the day in different forms (grilled and sashimi) and some other appetizers (fried fish, tofu, etc) and specialties, all accompanied with excellent sake and local company. Price per person: ¥4,000–5,000 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

Literally a hidden gem. Loads of locals chilling with a drink and some good food. The host does not speak English but we made do with google translate. She was very friendly and quick to tell us it was not a restaurant. Everyone needs to order at least one alcoholic drink before being served food. We didn’t mind! Plum wine was lovely and we enjoyed what was probably the most authentic Japanese experience we had. It’s located on the second floor in case you’re wondering how to get in!
