Dear Albertsons Corporate, First, I’d like to congratulate whoever championed the digital coupon program. It has accomplished something I didn’t think was possible—it has turned buying groceries into an interactive team-building exercise. Mission accomplished. Here’s how my Monday evening unfolded. I worked a 10-hour day. I rushed home to make sure my children had picked up the house before guests arrived. Once that was handled, I headed to Albertsons because, unlike the smaller grocery store less than a mile from my house, Albertsons carries the Coke and ice cream cake my son wanted. So far, so good. I grabbed my items and noticed a promotion: Buy 2 for $10.99. Get 2 Free. Excellent. I waited in line. And waited. Every register was moving slower than expected, but I wasn’t paying much attention. I assumed it was just another busy Monday. Finally, I reached the cashier and asked about the promotion. “Oh…that’s a digital coupon.” I’m sorry…what? Apparently, the sale wasn’t actually a sale. It was an invitation. An invitation to download an app, create or sign into an account, find the coupon, “clip” it, and complete a small digital scavenger hunt while standing at the register with a line of people behind me. Because nothing says “efficient checkout” quite like asking customers to complete IT onboarding while buying milk. Here’s the irony. I don’t mind waiting. What I do mind is becoming the reason everyone else has to wait. You know who else didn’t seem thrilled with this process? Your employees. As I stood there deciding whether I wanted groceries or a software installation, I started paying attention. Customers at self-checkout were confused. Other shoppers were asking why the sale wasn’t coming up. Employees were repeatedly explaining the digital coupon process. That’s when it hit me. The reason every checkout lane felt unusually slow wasn’t because your employees were inefficient. It was because Corporate had successfully inserted an extra step into every transaction. That’s actually impressive. You’ve managed to create a system that frustrates customers, slows checkout, increases employee workload, creates bottlenecks, and leaves everyone just a little more irritated than when they walked in. That’s not innovation. That’s operational gridlock with branding. Technology should remove friction, not manufacture it. If I’m already entering my phone number at checkout, why isn’t every eligible promotion automatically applied? Why advertise a price that requires a separate digital obstacle course to receive? If I have to stand at the register downloading an app just to buy cereal on sale, we’ve officially lost the plot. In the end, I returned my entire purchase. Not because I couldn’t figure out the app. Because I shouldn’t have to. Customers shouldn’t need a smartphone tutorial to buy groceries. Your employees shouldn’t have to apologize for a corporate decision they didn’t make. And checkout shouldn’t feel like I’m applying for TSA PreCheck. The best customer experiences are the ones customers don’t have to think about. When buying groceries starts requiring instructions, something has gone terribly wrong. When was the last time the decision-makers who approved this digital coupon strategy actually went grocery shopping? I mean alone. Tired. After a long day at work. Not wanting to pull out a phone. Not wanting to download an app. Not wanting to scan a QR code. Not wanting a tutorial in the checkout line. Just wanting to buy groceries and go. Because if the people making these decisions experienced their own checkout process, I have a hard time believing this policy would have survived the first meeting. Respectfully, Maria Cecilia Garcia P.S. One last thought: if multiple customers are discovering they need an app only after waiting in line, that’s not a customer problem. That’s a process problem. And process problems are usually solved in conference rooms—not checkout lanes. Do better! Buying groceries should not require a smartphone, an app, and a QR code.
