The Ceasar salad here was one of the best I have ever had! Every lettuce leaf was crispy, the croutons were crunchy and the bacon real! Most restaurants are happy to throw in the core of the lettuce along with the brown bits but not here! Would come again for the salad and the steak frites melt in your mouth! Vegan Disaster at Ms Mary Newcastle – A Ruined First Night in Newcastle. I recently visited Newcastle for the first time and stayed at the lovely Crystalbrook Kingsley while attending a show at the Newcastle Civic Theatre. Wanting a convenient and enjoyable pre-show dinner, we chose Ms Mary Newcastle, located on the ground floor of the hotel. It seemed perfect on paper — unfortunately, the reality was incredibly disappointing. As a vegan, I always check the menu before booking. The online menu clearly listed a falafel bowl and broccolini as suitable options. I even noted in my reservation that I am vegan. I checked the website again on the day of dining — the same menu was still displayed. However, when I placed my order, I was told the falafel bowl was “sold out” and there were no alternatives. No proactive suggestion — just a flat “no.” After I asked whether the chef could prepare something suitable, the staff returned saying gnocchi was the only option. I was then informed that the menu had apparently changed — within the last hour. Convenient timing, considering the website still displayed the old menu and no one mentioned this when we were seated. To make matters worse, the “vegan option” that eventually arrived was dreadful. The gnocchi and pumpkin dish was completely bland and drowning in oil. It was greasy to the point of being inedible. The side dish was essentially a bowl of lettuce — also swimming in oil. No flavour, no creativity, no care. I couldn’t eat either dish. For a restaurant attached to a high-end hotel, this was shockingly poor. The lack of communication, the complete absence of genuine vegan options, and the subpar food made for a very disappointing start to our Newcastle visit. Needless to say, I will never return — and I certainly wouldn’t recommend it to anyone looking for a decent pre-theatre meal, especially if you have dietary requirements. A terrible first dining experience in Newcastle. Food: 1 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 1 Meal type: Dinner Price per person: $40–60
