The 29-year-old Newsbar Cafe located on University Place, is the definition of a habitual spot with a price range of 8-25$. Although the way media is consumed has changed, the establishment still lives up to what its name represents by providing newspapers and small screens in the corner that are not an eyesore. Starting off with the coffee which what four out of five people coming through the door orders, can be best described as diner-style coffee which is not fancy but has enough comforting kick providing the dopamine one expects to get from coffee. Continuing with the theme of comfort, The chalkboard wall of melts and sandwiches is perfect for someone who is on the hunt for a comfort meal with the option of adding a serving or half of the salad or daily soup options. What stands out from the long list, is a fun option for classic grilled cheese: Portobello mushroom & Brie Cheese with pesto on multigrain toast which turned out to be a rich pairing of umaminess but then balanced well with the choice of crisp and tart bread and butter pickles on the side. Despite being a buzzing, counter-service establishment, the staff kindly brought out orders to tables at a surprisingly fast pace for a hot sandwich that I’ve assumed a wait time because of the melty cheese. Every table was kindly wiped down after each guest and bottles of both ice cold and room temperature water were offered complimentarily. The cafe truly feels like a meeting point amongst returning diners which adds to the warm atmosphere created by the dark green walls, dim lighting, and wood accents.
