Palay is a place that doesn't scream attention, it earns it quietly through intention, depth and soul. Hidden behind its understated presence is a Filipino dining experience that feels both Nostalgic but elevated, where every dish tells a story rooted in heritage, memory and the amazing flare of Chef Fhred. We had a set menu and every dish felt thoroughly curated. From Sizzling Sisig that packs of Filipino flavours and texture Topped with that sexy Sous Vide eggs to Kinilaw of white fish that brings creaminess of coconut milk/cream and sourness of vinegar and citrus down to the smooky of perfectly Grilled Chicken BBQ skewers. Not only they are talented preparing dishes and they can also blow your socks off with amazing voices as they singing karaoke in the house. Booking was easy and they were very accommodating, even with a last minute change to our group size. First impression was great. The staff who welcomed us was friendly and chatty, and we mentioned some of our group would arrive later, and there were no dramas. They were quite pushy with the feed me menu, but we preferred à la carte because it suited us more. Food was just okay, nothing really stood out, and for the price paid, the serving could have been better. Bit confusing that they served basmati rice for a Filipino restaurant, it didn’t feel very authentic. The beef skewer was tough to chew, but to their credit, they removed it from the bill when we raised it. Service unfortunately changed after that. The friendliness dropped off and there was no interaction or even a simple thank you for dining with them when we left. Luckily, we tried it ourselves before bringing other friends who were keen to experience Filipino cuisine. Unfortunately, we have to say that there is no reason for us to come back here. Hi Rachelle, Thanks for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re glad to hear your booking experience and initial welcome were positive. Our team offers the set menu as an option—especially for larger groups—but guests are always free to choose what suits them best. In terms of the food, we present Filipino flavours through our own lens, shaped by both tradition and our setting here in Melbourne. While it may not align with everyone’s expectations of what Filipino cuisine ‘should’ be, it reflects the direction of our kitchen. We appreciate your feedback on the dishes and have shared this with the team. We’re also sorry to hear that the service felt different towards the end of your visit—that’s something we’ll be addressing internally. Thank you again for your feedback

Was at the venue for late lunch. The service was friendly, warm and attentive. We had the chicken adobo silog, tortang talong and fish kinilaw to share. We also sampled their ice tea which was fizzy and delicious, along with the coffee ube late (which was equally amazing). The total bill came to under 100, not the cheapest BUT the flavours were AMAZING! When we left, we felt like we just had the most amazing meal at our relative's house. We will definitely be back again to try the other dishes on the menu. Meal type: Lunch Price per person: A$40–60 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
