On a cold winter's night a fisherman stood by the river, staring into the darkness and wondering whether the barramundi would bite. The barramundi, meanwhile, was somewhere else entirely, making other plans. One of those plans, regrettably for the fish, appears to have involved ending up at Tasty Cambodia. The omelette with salted fish arrived first, a dish that proves some of the best culinary ideas begin with someone looking into a pantry and making several questionable decisions that somehow become genius. The bitter melon salad was sharp, refreshing and just bitter enough to remind you that life contains adversity, though thankfully none of it was on this plate. Then came the sweet and sour soup with tomatoes, vegetables and barramundi. This soup was so comforting it felt less like a menu item and more like being adopted by a particularly kind Cambodian grandmother. The barramundi within was magnificent. Not content with one appearance, the fish returned in deep-fried sweet and sour form, golden, crisp and so delicious that any remaining fish in the river should consider witness protection. The service was warm, attentive and wonderfully genuine. Glasses were filled, dishes appeared at precisely the right moment, and nobody once questioned how quickly the food disappeared. So many barramundi... So many barramundi that one begins to suspect the river has retained legal counsel. So many barramundi that Neptune himself may soon lodge a complaint. So many barramundi that fishermen are checking whether the fish have emigrated. So many barramundi that the sweet and sour sauce should probably be classified as a navigational hazard. Tasty Cambodia is the sort of place that makes you order too much, eat all of it anyway, and leave convinced that tomorrow's problems can be solved by returning for more barramundi. A wonderful meal, wonderful people, and a wonderful reminder that some fish are destined for greatness. Unfortunately for them, that greatness is on a plate.
